My Summary
About Me
My Name is Rachel. I live in Lawley Village with my husband Oliver and our three children. I have been childminding since April 2016 and hold several qualifications including a BA in SEND and Inclusion, an Early Years foundation degree and level 2/3 awards in Understanding Autism, Supporting Dyslexia, Children and Young People’s Mental Health, Speech and Language Support and Forest School Leadership. I have also undertaken extensive training in areas including paediatric first aid, food hygiene and allergy awareness, child protection, safeguarding and delivering the EYFS. I remain committed to my professional development and am currently studying for a Master's in Early Years Education.
I offer a friendly and welcoming home-from-home environment from our house in the Woodland View area of Lawley. Balanced between the lounge, garden and kitchen, the children have access to plenty of space to explore and play. Our resources and equipment are changed frequently to sustain and follow the children’s interests and to suit our current topics. Recently we have been learning about farming animals and crops, dinosaurs and fossils, and coasts and oceans. The lounge is also home to our small world and role-playing toys as well as resources for babies and younger toddlers. Most of our resources are kept at child height to enable self-selection, with just a few out of reach to encourage early communication by having to ask (with words or gestures) for them.
We also make good use of open-ended play materials such as pine cones, log slices and wooden treasures which the children use inventively to build miniature worlds, intricate patterns and artistic creations. A wide variety of arts and crafts resources are available to enable creative expression , encourage early mark making and explore different materials.
All meals and snacks are served in the kitchen-diner with children seated around the table. We learn about where foods come from, making healthy choices and exploring different cultures through a wide variety of foods and cooking activities.
The garden is home to our ginormous mud kitchen, play house, water run, digging patch and fantastic open-ended play materials. Additionally, the adjoining enclosed driveway provides an excellent surface for children to practice pedalling and using the ride-on toys.
My Experience
I have been an Ofsted registered childminder since 2016, and additionally co-founded and helped to run the playgroup Lawley Ladybirds before it sadly closed in 2020. I have also volunteered as a Scout Leader, been a committee member of Puddleducks Under Fives group and volunteered at Lawley Primary School .
I have extensive experience in supporting children with a range of special educational needs and disabilities, both in my professional capacity and as a SEND parent myself. I hold a BA in SEND and Inclusion and have completed extensive training and qualification courses in a number of areas including speech language and communication, autism, dyslexia, listening and attention, and children’s mental health.
I have a wealth of knowledge and experience of the local authority’s SEND polices and procedures including experience of the EHCP process. I have good relationships with the local authority’s early year’s SEND team and work in partnership with wider support services such as Speech and Language Therapy, Children’s Occupational Therapy and Children’s Physiotherapy services.
