About Me
Position: Nanny (with housekeeping while children are at school/nursery 14 hours per week)
Location: Tufnell Park NW5
Live out
Start date: January 6
Hours: Full time approx. 45 hours
Salary Gross per annum: TBD depending on experience
Days and hours: Monday – Friday (will consider Mon - Thurs or Mon – Fri am) but appreciate flexibility
Ages of the children: Two children: G6 and B4
Summary:
A friendly family living in NW5 are looking for a nurturing, reliable and
organized nanny housekeeper to care for their two wonderful children – G6, attending local state school (Y2) and B4 (at local Forest school 1 full day (Monday 9-4pm) and 2 mornings 08.30 - 12.00).
Our previous nannies stayed 2+years and left for personal family reasons. We are seeking someone who can commit to us (for ideally 1 year minimum).
We are seeking someone reliable and mature, who sees their role as supporting the smooth running of the household. Both parents are self-employed in client facing roles and do not have consistent schedules, although they are very present. They need their nanny to keep the consistent routine in termtime. Holidays are more shared care with Mum. Mum also tries to do drop offs/pickups and after school activities as much as her work schedule permits so the candidate needs to be happy with some shared care. The nanny must be able to work with a gentle parenting philosophy – no timeouts, punishments or rewards etc. and be good at supporting the children to express their emotions. 14 hours a week the children are at school / nursery so there is a housekeeping element required during this time, predominantly for the children but occasional errands, shopping and cooking for the family. NOT cleaning. We have a weekly cleaner.
About the parents:
We value flexibility, empathy and clear communication and hope to find someone who shares these values. Our nannies have always become a much-loved part of our family and we are the kind of people who will build a relationship with the nanny and get to know them. The nanny needs to enjoy working in this kind of family environment where the mum is often around and frequently working from home (in the home office writing or teaching) The nanny also needs to be capable and confident enough to proxy parent if both parents need to travel out of London for long days to be with clients.
The parenting philosophy in the home is gentle / responsive parenting. We co sleep and are child led (as much as possible!) We don’t force independence, we don’t tell our children ‘not to cry’ or that they are ‘ok’ when they are clearly upset. We focus on developing their self-esteem by supporting them to know and trust themselves (their emotions, feelings and boundaries). We try and focus on connection before any ‘correction’ and believe that most, if not all, behavioural challenges expressed by the children require us to examine and change our own responses first. We need someone who is aligned with and supportive of this approach. We often draw on resources from Dr Becky Kennedy and Sarah Ockwell-Smith.
Both parents are self-employed, they don’t have jobs they can ring in sick to and they have no family support, so it is important that the nanny has an easy / reliable commute and a good history of dependability demonstrated by references. The dad frequently travels abroad for work, so the mum is solo parenting on these occasions - juggling the needs of the children and her own work demands. It is desirable that the nanny is open to the idea of flexibility about how the agreed hours are worked to support the family during very intense weeks or in the case of emergencies. The family are happy to give time back in lieu or pay over time when agreed with the nanny.
My Requirements
We are seeking someone who:
• Is a good communicator
• Is fun, nurturing and supports lots of free play!
• Is genuinely passionate about the emotional / social growth of the children
• Is experienced in supporting the development of a healthy sibling relationship
• Is aligned with and supportive of our parenting philosophy (see above)
• Is proactive and will take the initiative around the house (e.g. looking at what we are about to run out of in the kitchen or children’s cupboards, popping to the shops to buy toothpaste if required when children are at school / nursery)
• Is willing and able to cook healthy vegetarian food for the family
• Will take an interest in and support G6 with her school learning
• Is experienced in proxy parenting - confident and capable in managing the household and the safety and nurturing of the children on the very rare occasions when both parents need to be away for work or other exceptional reasons
• Is open to the idea of occasional overtime / baby sitting with time off in lieu
Childcare responsibilities:
• Transport children to and from school and extracurricular activities
• Plan and prepare healthy vegetarian food including taking responsibility for making packed lunches and nursery snacks
• Design and facilitate creative activities and games
• Supervise bath time and teeth cleaning
• Support with school reading
• Support playdates, day trips and other visits as required
• Observe children and work with parents to ensure their growth and social development and any challenges are well managed
• Facilitate the mum to have 121 time with each child by taking responsibility for the other child e.g. on an inset day or in half term.
There is a housekeeping element to this role. There are approximately 14 hours per week when both children are at school / nursery. We would ask our candidate to use this time to do the household tasks required. We also want to teach our children that contributions to family life are important - we do not want them to grow up thinking they have people to pick up after them! We try and involve the children in these things as much as possible e.g. they both fold clothes and sweep the floor after dinner. For info, we have a cleaner who attends weekly.
Housekeeping responsibilities
• Children’s laundry and putting away their clothes
• Washing and changing children’s sheets weekly and washing children’s flannels
• Managing and ordering household supplies for the children e.g. toothpaste, shampoo, vitamins, nappies
• Managing the household grocery list and placing the weekly food order (online app)
• Supporting children to tidy up their room and play areas / toys
• Meal preparation for the children (batch cooking)
• Clearing kitchen, loading dishwasher etc. after dinner
• Food shopping / local errands e.g. dry cleaner or post office
• Sorting out children’s clothes they have grown out of
• Observing the need for and ordering new clothes/ shoes/ equipment for the children in collaboration with Mum
• Cooking family meals when possible e.g. 2-3 times per week.
