My Summary
About Me
I am an experienced academic tutor, STEM Ambassador, father of a little girl and I hope I can help your child excel in school and in higher education. AI and digital knowledge gap:
As Senior Lecturer at UCL and STEM Ambassador, I am able to follow changes in both worlds, school and the work place, and in recent years, I have observed a rapidly increasing gap between the knowledge conveyed in schools and the skill sets needed in the job market. Knowledge in statistics, maths and coding form the core of a world that is driven by technological innovation and automation. If you would like to find out our plans to create an academy where kids can learn in a fun and engaging way to code, to solve data problems, to understand technology and robotics, to learn how to create your first product line and start to understand an investor's mind, please read the last paragraph in "my experience".
My passion is to help your child to get the best possible start in University and higher education and to guide them to their next destination.
My Experience
I am teaching Chemistry, Statistics and Life Sciences at different levels up to University level.
My background and philosophy of teaching: I have more than 20 years of experience as an academic tutor and mentor. As a neuroscientist, I know that memory is best formed when the experience of learning is multi-layered and multi-faceted. My approach to teaching is a visual and hands-on experience, where I often tell the stories behind the subject matter, where I practically engage students to be part of the process of understanding new principles and cool facts.
My background is in Life Sciences and Entrepreneurship. I am teaching statistics, not only because it is the bread and butter of scientific studies, but also since many students struggle to read data or to make sense out of statistical analysis. Given the importance of statistics, it is always alarming to find out how peripherally it is taught in school and university, respectively.
I do one-to-one and group teaching and will personalise the content according to the entry level. All teaching sessions are virtual at the moment until further notice. While I start teaching statistics classes secondary school level, I am also offering advanced-level statistics courses to graduate or post-graduate students. Please find more detail below.
Courses for higher education, graduate, postgraduate and PhD level are described below.
(A) Statistics course “Competence in advanced statistical and data analysis” (PhD level)
Places are available for my virtual Statistics class (January intake) at £15-30/h, depending on the number of students. The curriculum is taught in ten 1h 30min sessions and includes: descriptive statistics, distribution, central tendency, dispersion, standard normal distribution, z- and t-statistics, Normality tests, parametric and non-parametric distributions, hypothesis testing, sample size calculations, ANOVA and Kruskal-Wallis test, Probability and Bayes Theorem.
(B) Statistics course “Confidence in statistical analysis” higher education entry level
(Information coming up soon and upon request).
University Students and Adult Learners:
I am helping students with data analysis, statistics, power calculations and graphical presentation of data for publication. On demand, I will analyse and plot your data with graphing software and final composite figures in Adobe Illustrator at professional and publication level.
PhD students in Life Sciences, Neuroscience, Cancer Research, Pharmacology:
I am helping students in planning scientific studies and experiments, hypothesis testing, statistical analysis of data and teach state-of-the-art scientific methodology. I am further advising on state-of-the-art scientific methods, including molecular cloning (Standard, Gateway, Gibson), apoptosis testing, transcriptional silencing, gene expression, transcriptomics, in vitro experimentation, protein biochemistry and CRISPR Cas.
AI, data science and digital knowledge gap: I am working with a small group of peers, who share my vision of an academy that aims to close the AI, data science and digital knowledge gap and empower children with skills that are pivotal to master the requirements of a quickly changing world. According to the World Economic Forum, 65% of children, who start primary school today will be working in completely new job types that don’t yet exist. Needless to say, the school system is unprepared to adapt to these quickly changing needs. If you are interested to follow our progress, please let me know and I will keep you posted about progress.
My Qualifications
Diploma in Chemistry/Biochemistry – University of Freiburg, FRG
PhD in Pharmacology and Toxicology (summa cum laude) – University of Wuerzburg, FRG
Current role: UCL Senior Lecturer and Principal Investigator since 2014
