I’ve been working with children since I was 14 years old and it is such a passion of mine.
I began working with children when I volunteered at Sandleford nursery. Here I developed my passion for working with children and learnt a lot about the developmental stages. Some of my duties were playing with the children, helping with lessons, helping with snacktime and going on walks with them.
I babysat three children once weekly, here I helped prepare food, feed the children, put them to bed, help with homework, tidy around the house and change nappies. This was so lovely as I was able to create such a bond with the children. We played lots of games, had dance parties, made forts and played a lot outside. From this role I learnt a lot about routine and different activities the children enjoyed. I believe this experience really cemented my love of childcare.
After this I decided I wanted a professional role and got a job at Reddam house nursery whilst I was in education. Here I worked in the mornings and evenings before/after school. I also worked full days in my holidays.
Some of my responsibilities were feeding children, changing nappies, helping with potty training, making bottles, putting children down for naps, playing with them, running lessons and going on walks. I learnt a lot about safeguarding, first aid and food safety. Additionally I learnt a lot about key techniques for childcare and many activities that children enjoyed which also helps them complete the learning development they needed.
Here we followed the Reggio Emilia approach (based on a ‘rhythm of the day’) where children directed their own learning. Additionally I learnt a lot about helping children self regulate their emotions and recognise what emotions they are feeling. This helped them build stronger relationship and their communication skills.
After this on my gap year I worked at wizard staff solutions. Here I temped in nurseries around Berkshire and Oxfordshire. This was really interesting and I think it gave me a lot of insight into which childcare approaches I wanted to incorporate into my own style. It also helped me develop my own skill set. Additionally I learnt a lot about adaptability and forming relationships effectively.
Although I really enjoyed temping, wanted a more permanent role where I could get to know the children better. I began working as a care worker in the junior boys boarding house at Mary Hare school. In this role I learnt how to manage schedules, put children to bed, help them with their organisation, arrange and lead activities (such as; football, board games, movie nights, cooking/baking etc), lead trips, helped with homework and supervised breakfasts and dinners.
This job was so eye-opening. Many of the children at Mary Hare have other disabilities alongside being deaf. This taught me lots about patience and communication. It was such an enjoyable position for me and I really loved to hang out with the children.
Unfortunately due to coronavirus many of the children were sent home at Easter. I continued on in my position as around 25% of the children were in school because their parents were key workers. During this time I supervised lessons, arranged and supervised activities (e.g. fort making), cleaned and organised the boarding house, hung out with the children and playing games and much more.
In the summer of 2021 I worked as a nanny in a private household with two amazing children - a girl (9) and a boy (7).
During this time I performed many routine tasks such as cooking nutritious meals, taking kids to and from school and activities (driving) and helping with homework, bath time and bedtime. I liaised worn parents, teachers, activity leaders and other guardians in order to help schedule the children’s activates.
Additionally I planned many fun excursions to places such as the farm park, going swimming in the river and day trips to places like the trampoline park and Chessington World of Adventure. We did lots of arts and crafts projects, played many make believe games, built forts and made up dances. I also stayed with the children for a couple of days whist the parents were away.
In spring of 2022 I began looking after a boy who was only 3 month old at the time. Here I created immersive activated to aid learning development including tummy time activities/sensory experiences, tuff trays and fine motor activities.
Additionally to aid the family I created and updated routined to help with weaning and sleep training.
Here I also performed basic duties of preparing bottles and meals, planning excursions, stayed overnight, swim training, gymnastics class and attended social events with the family to provide offsite care (e.g dinner parties, christenings).
I continue to provide this family with childcare help when I am back at my family home and have built a long lasting relationship.
After graduating from university, I spent three months in California as an Au Pair, where I cared for three children: a 2-year-old girl and two boys, aged 7 and 10. Living full-time with the family, I worked closely with the chef and house assistant to manage the children’s schedules, create meal plans, organise school lunches, and maintain snack inventories, all while adhering to the children’s nutritional plans.
My daily responsibilities included school drop-offs, homework support, and managing after-school activities. I also planned and took the children on excursions, such as trips to San Francisco, mini-golf outings, visits to the park, and museums.
For the youngest child, I spent most days with her where I handled essential care tasks such as bath time, nap time, nappy changes, and bottle feeding. I also tracked her developmental milestones, adjusting her activities and toys to suit her evolving needs. I supported her in ballet, art, swim, and music classes.
In addition to my core duties, I focused on encouraging the boys' independence by introducing age-appropriate chores, such as taking out their lunchboxes and making their beds. This helped them build responsibility.
I also prioritised emotional regulation, teaching the children how to manage their emotions through calm, positive communication and adapting my approach to each child’s developmental stage.
Furthermore, I provided childcare during family outings to restaurants, on boats, and during flights, ensuring the children were cared for and engaged. I also accompanied the family on trips across states, maintaining a consistent routine while adapting to new environments.
This was my favourite child care experience to date. It taught me so much about constantly improving and building lasting relationships. I had such a joy working here.
