My Summary
About Me
My name is Lily and I am 22 years old, living in Walton-on-Thames.
I grew up in Worthing, West Sussex, a reasonably small town on the South Coast. After working as a Home Care Personal Assistant for 5 years, while studying to be a Social Worker, I have now transferred my skills into becoming a full time Nanny!
My Experience
My name is Lily and I am 22 years old, living in Walton-on-Thames.
I grew up in Worthing, West Sussex, a reasonably small town on the South Coast. I completed all my school years, where I had a strong interest in working with children. When I was given the opportunity to choose my GCSEs, I decided I would study a Cambridge National Qualification in Child Development where I earned a Distinction Grade. This course helped to develop my knowledge and understanding of the needs of children between birth and 10 years old. I was also able to develop my learning on reproduction, pregnancy, and birth.
I moved onto a college in Worthing where I studied a Level 3 Diploma in Health and Social Care. During this course, I completed various modules based around the needs of children and young people. Modules in this course included health and safety, first aid training, child development, supporting looked-after children, building positive relationships etc.
I also carried out a placement in a primary school supporting children in a Year 1 and Year 2 class. I was able to create learning activities for children with different abilities, supporting them with handwriting, maths and creativity. I received a Triple Distinction grade in this course which allowed me to apply for university courses and further extend my learning.
When I turned 18, I moved to Kingston upon Thames where I joined Kingston University studying a BA Hons in Social Work. During this course, I carried out two long-term placements. The first placement was a 6-month placement at Home-Start, supporting parents and families with children under 5 years old. I would support parents/carers with activities for the children, help develop the children’s learning and attend special appointments with the children such as accompanying them to Speech and Language Therapy.
I then carried out a second placement in a Local Authority Social Work team, supporting looked-after children. I completed 4 months of this placement, where I visited families across the UK and helped achieve permanency by writing reports and carrying out Special Guardianship assessments. However, after the loss of my grandmother, I then had to take some time out of University and have taken a year study break.
During my studies as a whole, I worked as a home carer/personal assistant for two young people with disabilities between 2020 and 2024. This role included assisting with meal times, bathing and toileting support, mobility support and the use of equipment, accompanying the young people to places of study and employment, administering medication orally and through enteral feeding tubes.
Communication was an essential aspect of this role as one of the young people I cared for struggled with verbal communication and experienced slurring of their words. It was important for me to learn how this individual spoke and pronounced certain things. To avoid any barriers, we often used communication cards with images to help her when explaining more complex things. She also had an iPad connected to her wheelchair which helped her with speech and pronunciation which we were able to use to practice conversations.
Another important aspect of my caring role has been providing healthy, nutritious and exciting meals for those I work for. During my PA role, the young people had very specific dietary requirements and struggled with eating new foods. It was important for me to encourage a balanced diet and eating their 5 a day. I was able to do this by creating exciting activities such as baking, incorporating fruits and other nutritious ingredients. I also involved the young people in cooking their meals so they were able to learn what foods were going into their meals!
