My Summary
About Me
I have a lifelong passion caring for people and working with children and vulnerable adults. I grew up caring for a special needs brother who is deaf/blind, autistic and ADHD with verbal and motor tics and a mother with neurological issues due to a brain tumour; this has given me a breadth of essential experience with a range of conditions and is something that I still draw on in my current work and personal life providing more informed care to children and adults. I began working with special needs children shortly after in both an educational and recreational settings; this is something I take great care in doing, to always support the children to achieve their personal goals whilst having fun in a safe environment. I also have lived experience in a mental health and special needs capacity, I use my insight in these areas to better support the children and adults I interact with, relating to their struggles and working to understand them as individuals.
I am currently studying Forensic Psychology at London Southbank university and am about to start my third year. Psychology is a passion of mine, and with my lived experience, is utilized to better understand people and interpret their actions, to understand why they are engaging in certain behaviours, even when these are communicated in a non-verbal way.
My Experience
I have extensive experience working with children with autism and other special needs, both in an educational and recreational setting. My main focus is understanding behaviour, I have an informed approach also supported by caring for my special needs brother. I currently work at CHIPS which is a special needs playgroup and also in various SEN schools as a teaching assistant. I can assist a child during meal times and prompt them to drink and eat. I also understand how to regulate a child’s emotions, to mitigate any potential meltdowns. I have also had extensive experience with non verbal children through my work and can utilise PECS cards and Makaton to aid communication. Overall, I have a great passion for the work that I do, and look for opportunities to continue and expand upon working with special needs children.
My Qualifications
I have GCSEs and A-levels and am studying forensic psychology
