My Summary
About Me
I have always considered myself to be a very nurturing person. As well as being told this by friends and family. I am also a patient person, which I believe is a superpower and good skill to have around children! Patience was something that I learned a lot during my time as a mentor. For instance, when I first met with my mentee, he was very quiet and wouldn’t talk much. This went on for a few sessions. It was important for me to provide a strong emotional environment where he’d feel safe by also making sure to move at his own pace. Naturally, he began to open up to me and started to engage more in our sessions. I noticed that allowing him to take his time and not pressure him helped in building a trusting and healthy relationship, which is fundamental when working with children.
My university dissertation was based on mental health, which is a topic that I am extremely passionate about. It is a topic that I spent months researching and gathering a lot of data. Mental health is one of the most concerning issues regarding the overall health and well-being of children. It is especially important to be aware of the negative impact it can have on children from an early age, which we were able to see during COVID-19 and the restrictions that arose during e-learning.
Last but not least, having FUN! I, for one, love baking and I know that children will jump at the opportunity to get their apron on and into the kitchen. Especially if that means they’ll get a yummy treat at the end of it!
Children thrive when they are having fun and are able to express themselves through play and creative activities. Both indoor and outdoor play are beneficial for children and their cognitive development. I’ve always enjoyed taking part in different activities with the kids during my time at both nurseries. Some of these would include imaginative play, singing/dancing, sand play and drawing.
Taking the child’s likes and interests and implementing them into activities which they’ll enjoy is also something that I have appreciated doing.
My Experience
Over the years, I’ve had opportunities to work with children from ages 1-12 and carry out placement work as part of my sixth-form and university courses.
Whilst in sixth form, I studied Health and Social care. One of the requirements for the course was to take up work experience in an early years setting, which I completed for three months at Alphabet Lanes Nursery and Preschool in West Norwood. Here, I learnt the importance of safeguarding and all the different measures that were put in place/had to be carried out at the nursery.
I learnt to work as a team but also individually. A few times, I was given the opportunity to plan activities, which included games, dancing sessions, reading time and outdoor play. Supervising the children was a key role that I had during my time at the nursery.
In addition, I also took up mentoring for both years at sixth form as part of the enrichment programme. My role included being paired with a mentee from Year 7, with whom I’d provided pastoral support by meeting weekly and planning one-to-one sessions. Other times, I would have sessions during their lesson and provided literacy support there, too. This was very rewarding as, over time, the mentee developed trust with me as their mentor, and I was able to watch them grow and improve throughout the year.
During the second year, we were given the opportunity to work in one of my sixth-feeder primary schools. I was placed at St Andrew's Primary School, and my role here mainly consisted of aiding in literacy support to the students.
As part of my second year at University, we had to complete a placement module, which was carried out at Maytree Nursery in Clapham Park. Unfortunately, this was cut short once we went into lockdown. I did manage to complete a couple of hours of placement there, and my main roles included leading story time for a group of children, supervising playtime (both indoor and outdoor), and setting up activities for the children such as wet play, painting and arts and crafts.
I have now been working as a Nanny for over a year and I am loving it!
